Anzac Day at the Kokoda Track

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh will travel to Papua New Guinea on 22nd April 2026 to participate in the Anzac Day service at the Isurava Memorial on the Kokoda Track.

Australia and Papua New Guinea share a strong bond, formed during World War II when their forces collaborated on the Kokoda Track to repel a Japanese attack on Port Moresby.

“Australia and Papua New Guinea are more than close neighbours and allies,” Minister Keogh stated. “Our people share a special bond forged in war on the Kokoda Track.”

Significance of the Kokoda Campaign

Between July and November 1942, around 8,000 Australian soldiers endured harsh conditions, including intense heat and disease, while facing sustained attacks. Approximately 625 Australians were killed, and 1,600 were wounded during this campaign.

Minister Keogh plans to complete a section of the Kokoda Track during his visit. He will also meet with defence and embassy officials, as well as local veteran support groups.

In addition to attending the Anzac Service at Isurava, he intends to visit several Australian war graves in the area. These visits highlight the continued respect and remembrance for those who served.

The trip follows last year’s signing of the Pukpuk Treaty, which marked Australia’s first alliance in over 70 years. This treaty aims to ensure a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

Australian and Papuan military personnel continue to train together, reflecting the mutual trust and camaraderie between the two nations. Anzac Day serves as a day of remembrance for the more than two million Australians who have served in uniform, particularly the 103,000 who lost their lives.

On 25th April, the Anzac Day service at the Isurava Memorial will mark a significant moment of remembrance and reflection for both countries. This day is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by service members.

The enduring partnership between Australia and Papua New Guinea is exemplified by shared military training exercises and cooperative defence initiatives. Such collaborations strengthen regional security and enhance bilateral relationships.

Minister Keogh’s visit to Papua New Guinea reaffirms the importance of historical ties and the commitment to future cooperation between the two nations. The continued joint efforts are vital for promoting peace and stability in the region.
