Queensland Seeks Redemption Against NSW

The 2026 PBR Origin Series will begin at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on 30th May, showcasing a fierce rivalry between New South Wales and Queensland in Australia's premier bull riding competition. This event is expected to draw thousands of fans, eager to witness the start of the series.

New South Wales, the reigning champions, aim to defend their title against a revamped Queensland team eager to reclaim dominance in the series. Queensland, having lost to NSW in the 2025 finale by 500.25 points to 419.50, is determined to avenge that defeat.

The event marks the first of three competitions, followed by Brisbane on 6th June and culminating in Sydney on 1st August. Each match promises high-stakes action as teams battle for state pride and the coveted trophy.

Queensland's squad, led by coach Jared Borghero, features top riders like Kurt Shephard, Macaulie Leather, and Donnie Rutherfurd, all returning from successful campaigns in the United States. Zane Hall, Boston Leather, and Ben Bode add depth to the lineup.

Meanwhile, NSW boasts a strong lineup including returning standouts Sam Woodall, Clint Glass, and Dylan Weir. International riders Keny Roger and Alison Aguiar from Brazil add further strength to their roster.

Junior Riders Take the Spotlight

Before the main event, junior riders will participate in the spotlight, showcasing emerging talent from the Can-Am Junior Academy. Teams from both states will feature young riders aged 9 to 17, providing a platform for future bull riding stars.

Tickets for the Newcastle event are available through Ticketek Australia. The series promises thrilling action for bull riding fans, as elite athletes compete in one of the sport's most unpredictable arenas.

Simon Mallory of PBR Australia remarked on the importance of the Newcastle event, stating that both teams are expected to perform at their best: "Queensland has Macaulie Leather fresh back from competing in the USA World Championships, in superior form, however, he will need to hit the practice pen to reconnect with the Aussie Bulls bucking style."
