Educational Leaders to Study at Harvard

Two principals from New South Wales' South Coast, Ruth Winfield and Caroline David, have been awarded the 2026 Harvard Principals Scholarships. This prestigious recognition allows them to attend the Harvard Graduate School of Education later this year. They will be joined by recipients from Queensland and Tasmania.

Ruth Winfield has been leading Vincentia High School since 2019. Her school serves seven local villages and the Wreck Bay Aboriginal community located in Booderee National Park. Some students travel up to an hour by bus each day to attend. Under her leadership, the school has gained national recognition for its Dhurga language program, which is taught to every student in their first year.

Winfield spent five years widening pathways for young people into employment, TAFE, and university. She completed her doctorate while managing the school full time and published her research nationally in 2025. "I believe this programme will assist me in deep reflection and thought generation with other accomplished learners," said Ruth Winfield, Principal of Vincentia High School.

Commitment to Public Education

Caroline David, Principal of Woonona High School, is steadfast in her commitment to providing a world-class education for all students. She is currently completing a PhD, applying her research insights to improve her school's educational practices. David is known for her research-led approach to school leadership.

"Every child who comes through our doors has access to a world-class education, for free," stated Caroline David, highlighting her dedication to democratic educational values. This scholarship gives her the opportunity to connect with other principals globally who face similar educational challenges.

NSW Education Secretary Murat Dizdar praised both principals, stating, "NSW public schools are home to some of the finest educators in the world and Ruth Winfield and Caroline David are proof of that." He noted that their selection reflects the high standards present in NSW public schools.

The scholarships are awarded by the Public Education Foundation in partnership with Teachers Mutual Bank and the Harvard Club of Australia. Recipients are chosen based on their leadership, commitment to public education, and the ability to integrate the Harvard experience into community improvements. Manisha Amin, CEO of the Public Education Foundation, described Ruth and Caroline as leaders who have dedicated themselves to their schools and communities.
