Cumberland City Council Celebrates Funding Success
On 30th May 2026, the NSW Government will announce the successful applicants of the first round of the NSW Rugby World Cup Legacy Programme at Holroyd Sportsground. This initiative aims to strengthen rugby’s infrastructure and community presence across the state.
Offering up to $2.15 million in grants, the programme supports rugby clubs and local councils. It focuses on enhancing rugby facilities, developing player pathways, and boosting participation rates. This funding is part of a larger $10 million investment by the NSW Government in rugby union, following New South Wales’ role in hosting the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup.
Cumberland City Council Receives Funding for Facility Upgrade
Cumberland City Council is among the beneficiaries, receiving funds to improve female-friendly facilities at Holroyd Sportsground. This upgrade aims to encourage more women to participate in rugby, reflecting the program’s inclusive approach.
The event will feature NSW Government representatives, NSW Rugby Union CEO Peter Murphy, and Chris Stanley, Managing Director of Rugby World Cup 2027. Their presence highlights the program’s importance for the sport’s future development.
Merrylands Rugby Club President Steve Macklin, along with local MPs such as Member for Coogee Dr. Marjorie O’Neill and Member for Granville Julia Finn, will also attend. Their participation underscores the community’s commitment to fostering a vibrant rugby culture.
Scheduled for 10 am on Saturday, 30th May 2026, at Holroyd Sportsground, Peel Street, Holroyd NSW 2142, the announcement promises a unique photo opportunity. Key figures from the rugby community, including both junior and senior players from Merrylands Rugby Club, will be present, celebrating the strides made in local sports development.
The NSW Rugby World Cup Legacy Programme is an integral part of New South Wales’ preparations for the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup. By investing in local infrastructure and development, the state aims to create lasting benefits that will extend beyond the event itself.
