Five Towns to Host Camel Races in July

The Outback Camel Trail is making a return this July, bringing its signature blend of dust, drama, and desert legends to five towns across Outback Queensland.

The trail will kick off in Jundah with camel races on the 3rd and 4th of July, followed by the Birdsville Carnival from the 6th to the 9th. Bedourie will host camel and pig races on the 11th, with the Boulia Camel Races occurring from the 17th to the 19th, and concluding with the Winton Camel Races on the 25th.

Last year’s races saw fierce competition between Geoffrey and Polished Copper, camels from Oakfield Ranch in NSW, each claiming two major titles. Geoffrey triumphed in Boulia and Winton, while Copper reigned in Jundah and Bedourie. The event attracted nearly 7,000 attendees, with over 20 camel races and various novelty events such as pig and yabby races.

An Epic Outback Event

According to Winton Shire Council Mayor Cathy White, last year’s success is set to continue. “Race day here last year was a massive success, and we’re already gearing up for an even bigger, better and bolder event in 2026!” she stated.

The trail not only offers camel races but also showcases unique cultural events, including the Birdsville Bakery’s camel pies, open-air film screenings, and the Crack Up Sisters’ performances in Boulia.

Denise Brown, CEO of the Outback Queensland Tourism Association, emphasised the trail’s impact on local tourism. “The Desert Champions Way: Outback Camel Trail was designed to celebrate one of the Outback’s most iconic attractions,” she said.

With events spread across five weekends, the trail provides a comprehensive agenda for those looking to explore the vibrant culture and landscapes of Outback Queensland. Attendees can experience a range of activities, from camel tagging to stargazing, making it a bucket-list adventure for many.

A highlight of the event is the Melbourne Cup of Camel Racing in Boulia, which draws spectators from far and wide. This year, the trail promises to be even more spectacular due to recent rains causing a once-in-a-decade bloom of desert flowers, adding vibrant colour to the already stunning landscape.

In addition to the camel races, visitors can enjoy quirky events such as broom throwing in Bedourie and camels in a bar at the Birdsville Hotel, ensuring a unique Outback experience.
