Brisbane Debut of 'The Power of Choice'

Award-winning photographer Julian Kingma will premiere his end of life exhibition ‘The Power of Choice’ in Queensland, opening on 8 April at the Brisbane Powerhouse. This exhibition is based on Kingma’s Walkley Award-winning book, offering an in-depth exploration of voluntary assisted dying (VAD). Through a series of powerful portraits and personal stories, the exhibition presents an intimate and thought-provoking look at VAD, inviting audiences to consider one of life’s most profound questions: what makes a good death? Kingma’s lens humanizes Australia’s VAD laws by sharing the experiences of individuals who have chosen this path, as well as the loved ones and carers who support them.

Each story within ‘The Power of Choice‘ reflects themes of dignity, autonomy, and compassion. The exhibition encourages open dialogue and helps challenge the stigma surrounding end-of-life choices. Originally developed as a storytelling project, the exhibition has evolved into a compelling visual narrative, brought to life from Kingma’s award-winning book.

Exhibition Details

The exhibition will run for 12 days, from 8 April to 19 April, and will be open to the public during gallery hours at Brisbane Powerhouse’s Fairfax Studio. Go Gentle Australia, the presenter of the exhibition, is a national charity founded in 2016 by broadcaster Andrew Denton. The organisation promotes and enables choice at the end of life, including voluntary assisted dying. Go Gentle Australia is seeking to expand the exhibition to regional Queensland, including areas like Far North Queensland. They have called for expressions of interest from regional communities to bring the exhibition to these areas in the future.

The exhibition not only provides a platform for the stories of those involved in VAD but also serves as a catalyst for broader discussions on end-of-life choices. By focusing on personal narratives, Kingma seeks to foster empathy and understanding, bridging the gap between policy and personal experience. For further information or media inquiries, contact Go Gentle Australia at 0426 283 865 or email them directly. The exhibition promises to be a moving experience for all who attend, shedding light on the complexities and emotions surrounding the end of life.

In 2016, Go Gentle Australia was founded by Andrew Denton with the mission to advocate for end-of-life choices. Since its inception, the organisation has been dedicated to promoting voluntary assisted dying as an option for those facing terminal illnesses. Denton’s involvement has brought significant attention to the cause, emphasizing the importance of individual autonomy and compassionate care. The exhibition complements these goals by providing a visual representation of the issues at stake.
