Vision Zero Ambition for Allergy-Free Future
Professor Mohamed Shamji has assumed the presidency of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) after the Annual Congress 2026 concluded in Istanbul on June 19. This event signified a major advancement towards achieving Vision Zero, a future without the burden of allergy and asthma.
The Congress, themed ‘Vision Zero: A Future Free from Allergy and Asthma Burden’, drew 7,429 delegates from 110 countries. They presented 2,420 scientific abstracts, focusing on advances in allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology.
At the General Assembly and Closing Ceremony, Professor Shamji formally took over the presidency from Professor María José Torres. Her leadership was distinguished by a commitment to scientific excellence and international collaboration.
Professor Shamji’s Vision
Professor Shamji envisions building a global community of experts, healthcare professionals, and patients. He aims to integrate education, science, clinical guidance, and digital engagement to speed up discoveries and improve patient outcomes.
Professor Torres reflected on her term, saying, “It has been a privilege to serve as EAACI President, and I am proud of the advances we have made in strengthening our community and our Vision Zero ambition.”
The Congress highlighted the importance of prevention, innovation, and equitable access to care in reducing allergic diseases. Participants discussed how scientific and technological advances could bring meaningful improvements in patient outcomes.
This year, the Congress showcased the diversity and strength of the global allergy community. It united clinicians, researchers, healthcare professionals, patient representatives, and industry partners to exchange knowledge and form new collaborations.
As the new Executive Committee term begins, the collaborations and scientific advances from the Congress are expected to influence future research and healthcare policy worldwide. Digital innovation and patient-centred care were particularly emphasised as growing trends in the field.
