Decommissioning of Cyclotron Facility Discussed
On 7th May 2026, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works is set to inspect the National Research Cyclotron Facility (NRCF) in Camperdown, Sydney. This visit is part of the committee’s comprehensive review of the proposed decommissioning and demolition plans for the facility.
History and Purpose of the NRCF
Operational for 30 years since its establishment in 1991, the NRCF housed a cyclotron used to produce radioisotopes mainly for medical imaging research. The cyclotron was crucial in developing radiopharmaceuticals for patient diagnostics. In 2021, the facility was permanently closed as the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) shifted its focus to researching new radiopharmaceuticals at Lucas Heights.
The proposed works at the Camperdown site are estimated to cost $17 million (excluding GST). The site is located on land leased from the Sydney Local Health District, adjacent to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. ANSTO’s strategic shift towards new research underscores the importance of such hearings in facilitating public awareness and understanding of evolving scientific priorities.
Following the site inspection, a public hearing is scheduled at Brown Street Community Hall in Newtown, NSW, from 1:30 pm to 2:10 pm on 7th May 2026. Interested parties are encouraged to attend in person or view the live broadcast via the APH website.
Mr. Tony Zappia MP, chairing the committee, will lead the questioning of ANSTO officials regarding the decommissioning plans. the committee does not participate in contract tendering or awarding processes related to the project.
The public is urged to listen to the hearing online or attend to gain insights into the project’s implications. Such engagements allow for transparency and public involvement in significant governmental projects.
For those with media inquiries, Mr. Tony Zappia MP can be contacted at (08) 8265 3100. The Committee secretariat is available for background information at 02 6277 4636, and further details can be found on the APH website.
The NRCF’s decommissioning aligns with ANSTO’s strategic direction, focusing on innovative research in nuclear medicine. The public hearing will provide an opportunity to discuss the future of nuclear science in Australia and the role of the Camperdown site in the broader context of health and technology development.
