Inquiries Cover ANSTO, DEWR, Defence Projects
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works has initiated three new inquiries into proposed projects by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), and the Department of Defence. These inquiries were announced on 25th June 2026.
ANSTO plans to replace its backup power network with a centralised High Voltage system at the Lucas Heights site in New South Wales. This project includes a new Campus Utilities Building and is estimated to cost $30.416 million. Aiming to enhance the reliability of power supply, this infrastructure will support ongoing scientific research at the site.
At 40-60 London Circuit, Canberra City, DEWR aims to fit out its new leased premises, providing 46,389 m2 of modern office accommodation for its workforce. By consolidating DEWR and the Department of Education into a single precinct, it supports long-term operational requirements and strategic objectives. The estimated cost of this project is $110.641 million, equating to $2,375 per square metre.
Meanwhile, the Department of Defence proposes to develop facilities at RAAF Base East Sale, Victoria, for the Future Air Mission Training System. Aligned with the National Defence Strategy 2026, this project includes working and training accommodation, simulation equipment, and Living-In Accommodation. Estimated at approximately $130.8 million, these facilities will modernise defence training capabilities.
