47 Greyhounds Rehomed in Sydney

On the 19th of April 2026, a remarkable 47 greyhounds were rehomed at the National Adoption Day event. This event occurred at the Entertainment Quarter in Sydney’s Moore Park, marking it as the most successful adoption event organized by Greyhounds As Pets NSW (GAP).

GAP’s event surpassed the previous year’s record of 41 adoptions at the same location. The 2018 NAD event held at Wentworth Park had previously set the highest record. Mark Slater, Chief Welfare Officer at Greyhounds As Pets, expressed his amazement at the turnout, saying, “I’ve attended a lot of adoption events in my time and I have never seen anything like this.”

Unprecedented Interest in Greyhound Adoption

Approximately 300 to 400 people attended, with many arriving early to ensure they could adopt a dog. Interest had surged following the Royal Easter Show, where the Greyhounds As Pets stand had attracted significant attention. Slater mentioned, “We had people here today queuing up half an hour before we commenced, wanting to make sure they didn’t miss out on the dog they hoped to adopt.”

Additional adoption events took place in Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Tamworth, and Coffs Harbour. Final adoption numbers will be tallied this week to assess the state-wide impact of National Adoption Day. Slater emphasised, “If we get one greyhound into a new loving home then it’s a success story.”

Families were prominently present at the event, with many children interacting with the dogs. “People are in love with the breed. It’s synonymous with being a good family animal,” Slater noted. The event highlighted the breed’s gentle nature and suitability as pets.

Despite current economic constraints, the popularity of greyhounds as family pets remains strong. Slater mentioned, “We naturally understand that people have tighter budgets these days, but the love for these dogs is clear.”

Greyhounds As Pets NSW aims to continue raising awareness about the breed, emphasizing their potential as wonderful companions. The success of this event, attended by hundreds, indicates a growing appreciation for greyhounds. Slater concluded, “What these events are all about is exposing as many people as possible to greyhounds and what wonderful natures they have and what truly great pets they make.”
