Easter Travellers Urged to Follow Safety Guidelines

SYDNEY — The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has issued a warning to travellers this Easter, emphasising the importance of safe flight packing. According to CASA, passengers should avoid placing power banks, spare batteries, vapes, and e-cigarettes in checked baggage to prevent potential safety risks and flight disruptions.

The guidance comes as part of CASA’s ‘Pack Right. Safe Flight.’ campaign, which aims to ensure that holiday travel proceeds smoothly. The agency highlighted that improper packing could lead to significant delays or missed flights, impacting Easter travel plans.

Pip Spence, CEO and Director of Aviation Safety at CASA, stated, “Devices like phones, laptops, vapes, and power banks are common travel items, but they can pose serious fire risks if packed incorrectly.” She added that such items should always be carried in the cabin, where crew members are prepared to handle incidents.

Importance of Correct Packing

CASA emphasised that electrical devices requiring mains power can be safely packed in checked luggage, but spare lithium batteries and other high-risk items should remain in the cabin. The agency’s website provides detailed information on what items are permissible in checked and carry-on baggage.

Failing to declare dangerous goods when checking in, either online or at the airport, is a serious offence with significant penalties. Spence urged travellers to respect airline staff and fellow passengers, asserting that crew instructions are in place for passenger safety.

The aviation industry has faced considerable challenges, and CASA will conduct inspections during the Easter period to ensure safety standards are upheld. This announcement aligns with increasing awareness of flight safety amid rising passenger numbers post-pandemic.
