Life Sentences for Major Scam Operation

In a landmark decision, a Philippine court has sentenced three foreign nationals to life imprisonment for their roles in a significant scam syndicate tied to human trafficking. This verdict underscores the country’s determination to dismantle trafficking networks involved in cyber scam operations.

The convicted individuals received fines of ₱2 million each for their roles in orchestrating schemes that forced victims into fraudulent activities. The court’s decision is a major step towards regional accountability.

Andrey Sawchenko, Vice President for Regional Programs in Asia Pacific at International Justice Mission (IJM), commented, “This case targets the operators themselves, the architects of exploitation.” He urged Southeast Asian countries to adopt similar measures.

On May 4, 2023, the Philippine National Police raided the Clark Sun Valley Hub Corporation, rescuing over 1,000 potential victims, including Marcus, a survivor who later testified against the traffickers. His courageous testimony was pivotal in securing the convictions.

Marcus was trafficked to the Philippines in 2022 and forced to work in a scam hub, where he impersonated fake online personas to deceive victims. Following his rescue, he spent five months under witness protection, receiving support coordinated by the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) with IJM’s assistance.

“This legal victory is a beacon of hope. It tells every survivor that their voice matters, that justice can be won,” Marcus stated. His testimony, along with another victim’s, resulted in the court awarding ₱500,000 in moral damages and ₱100,000 in exemplary damages to each testifying victim.

The IJM continues to support survivors and collaborates with regional bodies to dismantle trafficking networks. They work with the United Resilience Network to push for systemic reforms and increase awareness about forced scamming.

Sawchenko emphasised, “This case shows that accountability is possible. We commend the Philippine government for its resolve to deliver justice for trafficking victims and hold high-level perpetrators accountable.”
