Shelton Calls for Action on Immigration and Radical Islam

Explicit Recognition of Radical Islam as a Threat

Lyle Shelton, the Family First National Director and NSW Legislative Council candidate, has welcomed the Coalition’s renewed focus on immigration and Australian values. However, he warns that failing to identify radical and political Islam as a threat may undermine community confidence.

The Coalition’s emphasis on immigration levels has been acknowledged by Shelton. He praised Angus Taylor for highlighting the pressures of record migration and the importance of integration. Despite this, Shelton noted that the speech lacked clarity by not naming radical Islam directly.

Community confidence, Shelton argues, is at risk if the Coalition does not address radical Islam as the ideology causing tensions. The failure to do so might lead to broad suspicions about all migrants, overlooking the real issues.

Concerns About National Security

Shelton stresses the importance of distinguishing between ordinary Muslims and political Islam. Ignoring this difference could lead to unjust policies. He referenced a podcast discussion with John Anderson and Dr. Michael Youssef, highlighting the exploitation of Western freedoms by some Islamic leaders.

Shelton emphasised rising antisemitism and events like the Bondi massacre as factors stirring national debate. These issues have increased support for parties like One Nation, perceived as more forthright in addressing such challenges.

To tackle the roots of extremism, leaders must bravely address ideological origins, Shelton insists. Family First is committed to advocating for reduced migration levels and enhanced national security.

Shelton warns that the ideology of political Islam, in some cases, uses Western freedoms to weaken and replace them with Sharia law, similar to trends observed in the UK. He emphasises that this is not about race or ethnicity but about addressing an ideological threat.

Shelton further stresses the importance of naming the ideology behind extremism. He references that while ’80 per cent of Muslims are not Islamists,’ governments often fail to address the ideology driving the extremism seen in communities.
