Festival Celebrates 21st Anniversary with Record Shows

The Sydney Comedy Festival wrapped up on 17th May with the announcement of its 2026 award winners, marking a successful close to its largest programme ever. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, this year’s festival featured a record-breaking 411 shows and nearly 1,000 performances, making it the largest in its history. Packed venues and sold-out outdoor events were a common sight across Sydney, drawing large crowds eager for entertainment.

Reuben Kaye and Frankie McNair were named joint winners of the Best of the Fest Award, each receiving $1,500. Kaye’s show ‘Hard to Swallow’ was praised for its sharp wit and political commentary, addressing taboo truths with humor and insight. Meanwhile, McNair’s ‘Huge Ass Mindset’ tackled themes of anxiety and self-doubt, blending honesty with delightfully chaotic moments, including the character ‘MRS GOOGLY’.

Sean Collier took home the Best Newcomer Award for ‘Shitegeist,’ a show that delved into existential comedy and internet culture. As a late-twenties lawyer-turned-comedian, Collier entertained audiences with his absurd takes on societal collapse, rugby concussions, and the quirks of modern life.

The Burton Brothers received the Director’s Choice Award for their Hollywood-themed sketch show ‘Tinseltown.’ Their performance featured a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud trip through the glitz and chaos of Hollywood. They played every role from red carpet stars to on-set directors, capturing the essence of a blockbuster in one hour.

Sydney Comedy Festival general manager, James Declase, expressed the difficulty of selecting winners due to the high standard of performances. He stated, “A huge thank you to all the artists who participated this year, and an especially massive congratulations to Sean, Frankie, Reuben, and The Burton Brothers for their standout shows.”

The festival is supported by Young Henry’s and the NSW Government through Destination NSW. For more information, visit the festival’s official website.
