New Entity to Ensure Data Sovereignty
Thales and Google Cloud have announced a strategic partnership to launch a sovereign cloud in Germany. This collaboration aims to deliver advanced cloud services while maintaining data confidentiality and sovereignty. The announcement was made on May 20, 2026.
This new cloud solution will operate on dedicated infrastructure in Germany. Thales will manage it through a wholly-owned German entity. The design meets Germany’s stringent digital sovereignty and regulatory requirements, targeting public sector organisations and heavily regulated industries.
Christoph Ruffner, CEO and Country Director of Thales in Germany, explained, “This initiative provides German organisations with access to Google Cloud’s technology under full German control, ensuring protection from extraterritorial laws.”
Enhanced Cross-Border Disaster Recovery
This new offering complements Thales’ existing S3NS subsidiary in France. It creates a pan-European, geo-redundant cloud solution. The design provides cross-border disaster recovery capabilities, enhancing resilience for European clients.
Marianne Janik, Vice President, EMEA North at Google Cloud, highlighted the collaboration. She said it enables German organisations to innovate with confidence while adhering to local regulatory safeguards.
Currently in Preview, the sovereign cloud aims for general availability by the end of 2026. It aligns with Germany’s new C3A framework criteria. The new German entity will operate independently of Google Cloud and be staffed by local personnel to maintain data sovereignty.
The fully owned and controlled German entity by Thales will ensure no third party, including non-European entities, can access the data stored or processed within it. This move underscores Thales’ commitment to addressing Germany’s cloud security needs.
The official name of the new entity will be announced in the coming months. Thales continues to cement its role in the European market for sovereign cloud solutions.
By establishing this new sovereign region alongside PREMI3NS by S3NS, a Thales subsidiary, the partnership marks an industry-first. It is a pan-European, geo-redundant, sovereign cloud offering that delivers a unique cross-border disaster recovery solution for Europe.
