Partnership to Enhance Canine Initiatives
The American Kennel Club (AKC) and the New Zealand Kennel Club (NZKC) announced on May 20, 2026, that they have entered a mutual cooperation agreement. This partnership aims to enhance canine events and initiatives, benefiting the United States and New Zealand. It focuses on improving events, registrations, and promoting purebred dogs as family companions.
“Our agreement with the New Zealand Kennel Club reflects a deep commitment to preserving and advancing purebred dogs and dog events,” stated Gina DiNardo, President and CEO of the AKC.
Focus on Health and Education
The agreement encourages cooperation on canine health and welfare initiatives, such as sharing research, resources, and best practices. It aims to enhance the education of judges, exhibitors, and breeders, fostering a better understanding of purebred dogs.
Owen Dance, President of the NZKC, expressed excitement by saying, “We are delighted to formalize the relationship at the organisational level, to share resources and synergies as we work towards our common goals.”
Both organisations will explore opportunities to hold joint events and promote the registration of purebred dogs, expanding breeding opportunities and promoting responsible dog ownership. This is expected to deliver meaningful benefits to breeders, exhibitors, and dog owners.
“The NZKC was established in 1886. The country has a long tradition of responsible dog ownership,” noted Doug Ljungren, AKC Executive Vice-President for Sports & Events, highlighting the fruitful exchange of knowledge between the clubs.
The AKC, founded in 1884, maintains the world’s largest registry of purebred dogs. Each year, more than 26,000 competitions are held under AKC rules, showcasing the diversity and talent of purebred dogs.
This partnership strengthens global collaboration and enriches cultural exchange between the two countries, promoting purebred dogs as valued family companions and advancing the sport worldwide.
