Agreement covers events, registrations, education and canine health

Dogs Australia and the American Kennel Club entered into a Mutual Cooperation Agreement in New York on 23 July 2026.

The deal links two not-for-profit organisations in Australia and the United States.

It expands cooperation on canine exhibitions, purebred dog registrations, education, responsible breeding and responsible ownership.

The agreement also sets a framework for breeders, dog owners, exhibitors, judges and event officials in both countries.

Under the pact, the AKC and Dogs Australia will explore joint events and encourage the registration of purebred dogs.

They also plan to share knowledge to improve the education of judges, exhibitors, breeders and event officials.

Meanwhile, the groups will promote dogs as family companions and support canine health and welfare through research, resources and best practices.

Dogs Australia represents the interests of its member bodies throughout Australia.

Founded in 1884, the AKC maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world and oversees the sport of purebred dogs in the United States.

Its network includes more than 4,900 licenced and member clubs, along with affiliated organisations.

AKC President and chief executive Gina M. DiNardo argued that strong international partnerships are vital for the future of purebred dogs.

“We are honoured to collaborate with Dogs Australia as we work together to advance responsible breeding, expand educational opportunities, support the growth of dog sports, and celebrate the extraordinary bond between people and dogs.”

Dogs Australia President Hugh Gent OAM pointed to existing ties between some clubs, breeders, judges and competitors and AKC members.

He described the agreement as a way to share experience in canine health, research, sporting activities and other challenges facing both organisations.

Doug Ljungren, AKC executive vice president for Sports & Events, highlighted the sporting side of the partnership.

He called Dogs Australia’s sport activities wide ranging and said both sides expect to learn from each other and broaden their programmes.

The agreement also backs the exchange of research, resources and best practices to advance canine health and welfare.

Along with its affiliated organisations, the AKC advocates for purebred dogs as family companions and promotes responsible dog ownership.
