Framework Aims to Enhance Workplace Inclusion

The Welcoming Workplaces Standard, a new national framework focusing on inclusion and belonging, was launched on 20th May at the Welcoming Australia Symposium in Adelaide. This initiative provides Australian employers with a peer-reviewed benchmark to improve inclusive practices.

Developed by Welcoming Australia, the framework aims to shift the focus from employee readiness to employer preparedness in welcoming, retaining, and supporting a diverse workforce. It addresses workforce challenges such as shortages and skills gaps, especially for migrant, refugee, and Pacific workers.

Aleem Ali, CEO of Welcoming Australia, stated, "For too long, we've only asked if workers are ready for our workplaces. It's time to ask if our employers are ready for a diverse workforce. The Welcoming Workplaces Standard is the roadmap to bridge that gap by helping workplaces to address employer readiness in order to become employers of choice."

Opportunities for Employer-Community Partnerships

The standard also highlights opportunities to strengthen partnerships between employers and communities. Existing initiatives like the Mayoral Alliance for the Pacific, which supports Australia's Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme, serve as models for collaboration.

Ken Dachi, Welcoming Workplaces Coordinator, remarked, "Welcoming Workplaces provides the tools to turn intention into practical action. We broker the partnerships, share the knowledge, and celebrate the successes that allow workplaces to catalyse their own and broader community cohesion."

Joining the Welcoming Workplaces network allows organisations access to knowledge sharing, peer learning, community partnerships, and accreditation processes. This is designed to support continuous improvement and measurable impact, with further information available at welcomingworkplaces.org.au.

The initiative positions the social element of ESG as both measurable and rigorous, akin to environmental and governance standards. Inclusion becomes a social responsibility and a strategic business choice.

The standard acts as a living framework that helps transform Australian workplaces into environments where every business, be it a small regional enterprise or a large corporation, can become an 'Employer of Choice.'
