Wharf on Cloud 9 Brings Hot Air Balloon Dining to Melbourne

A one-of-a-kind dining experience on the Yarra at The Wharf Hotel

The Wharf Hotel is open, active and already turning heads this summer with its newest pop-up. Wharf on Cloud 9 has introduced Australia’s first hot air balloon dining pods, set along the Yarra River and designed to deliver a fun, private and creative waterfront experience.

The pods have landed for a limited season and offer a mix of comfort and novelty. Each pod feels like a small escape from the city while still sitting right in the heart of it. Groups can enjoy relaxed lunches, afternoon hangs or slow sunset dinners with views across the river.

Hot Air Pods Bring Something New

Guests order from The Wharf Hotel’s à la carte menu, which keeps the experience flexible and easy. Optional grazing boards include a charcuterie selection and a vegetarian alternative. While the pods look playful, the setup is structured well. Afternoon sessions run for 90 minutes and evenings run for two hours, which helps service flow smoothly.

On Fridays and Saturdays, bookings require a minimum of four guests and a $50 spend per person.

Sundays Built for Families

Sundays change direction with a softer family focus. Children’s entertainment runs from midday to 3pm and includes garden games and colouring activities. Younger diners also receive a party bag, which genuinely helps parents settle in.

Sunday sessions last 90 minutes and allow for up to six people per pod. There is a minimum spend of $100 per balloon.

A Riverside Setting That Sells Itself

The Wharf Hotel’s Siddeley Street location gives Wharf on Cloud 9 an edge. The Yarra setting adds an immediate sense of calm, and the balloon pods create a standout visual moment without feeling over the top. They offer shade, comfort and enough privacy to feel special without isolating diners from the energy of the waterfront.

The backdrop alone will drive plenty of social posts, and the pods almost guarantee a summer photo moment. This is part of why the pop-up is likely to take off quickly.

Why Wharf on Cloud 9 Works So Well

Melbourne has seen plenty of themed dining, although this one feels fresh because it is simple, accessible and visually clever. The pods offer something memorable that still works for casual catch-ups, special occasions or a spontaneous midweek lunch. The clear session structure also makes planning easy, which helps during Melbourne’s busy summer months.
