Margaret River Event Draws Attention to Environmental Concerns
MARGARET RIVER — Surfers are preparing to unite at the Wild Waves Forever event in Margaret River on Thursday evening, aiming to safeguard Scott Reef from potential industrial development. The event, organised by Surfers for Climate, will take place at The Common Bistro from 6 PM to 10 PM, featuring exclusive footage of the untouched surf break and updates on Woodside’s proposed $16 billion gas project.
The gathering comes as the Western Australian Environmental Protection Agency is set to make a recommendation on the project, which involves up to 57 gas wells near Scott Reef, according to Surfers for Climate. Josh Kirkman, CEO of the organisation, expressed concerns about the irreversible effects drilling could have on the reef’s ecosystem and surf conditions. “Once drilling starts, it’s changed forever,” Kirkman stated. “The ocean floor changes, the reef structure is compromised, and even the character of the place is destroyed.”
The Environmental Impact
Scott Reef, located 270 kilometers offshore, is renowned for its pristine waves and rich biodiversity, including endangered pygmy blue whales and green sea turtles. The proposed 900-kilometer pipeline presents additional risks, potentially affecting marine parks and the Rowley Shoals. Kirkman emphasized the broader environmental stakes, noting the potential for pollution to spread across multiple reef systems in the event of a drilling accident.
The event aims to garner support from fly-in-fly-out workers familiar with the region’s natural beauty, offering them incentives to attend. Kirkman reiterated that the initiative transcends politics, focusing instead on preserving Western Australia’s unique marine environments. “Whether you’re a surfer, fisher, diver, or just someone who loves the ocean, Scott Reef is worth saving,” he said.
