Vaccination Programs and Procurement Highlighted
SYDNEY — The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has endorsed the Western Australian Department of Health’s 2026 Winter Strategy, aimed at mitigating preventable illnesses and easing healthcare system burdens during peak winter months. This initiative includes expanded vaccination programs for children and adults, according to RACGP WA Chair Dr Ramya Raman.
Dr Raman highlighted the importance of broadening access to influenza vaccines, particularly for children and working-age adults who are often not fully covered. “Free access to influenza vaccination for more Western Australians will reduce severe illness and prevent avoidable hospitalisations,” she stated.
Impact of the Winter Strategy
The strategy, which runs from May 1 to June 30, 2026, offers free influenza vaccines to individuals aged 12-64 who are otherwise ineligible under the National Immunisation Program. The RACGP also supports the use of FluMist intranasal vaccines for children aged 2-11, available from mid-April to July 31, 2026. Dr Raman emphasized that offering an intranasal option is crucial for increasing vaccination uptake among young children.
The Department of Health’s decision to centrally procure vaccine stocks was praised by RACGP for improving efficiency and reducing waste. Dr Raman noted that the central procurement approach avoids duplication and ensures a more coordinated rollout across practices statewide.
RACGP reiterated the essential role of general practices in delivering vaccinations, advocating for strong support to ensure the program’s success. “These programs will only reach their full potential with robust support for general practice,” Dr Raman added.
In addition to vaccination efforts, the strategy encompasses public awareness campaigns and enhanced training for healthcare workers to handle increased patient loads during the winter months. The aim is to ensure that both urban and rural areas are adequately prepared to respond to potential health challenges.
The RACGP and the WA Department of Health are committed to continuous evaluation of the Winter Strategy to adapt and improve its effectiveness. This collaborative approach aims to safeguard the health of Western Australians and ensure a resilient healthcare system during the winter season.
