Government Invests in Connectivity Solutions

Today, the Australian Government announced a significant $11.6 million investment to deliver free community Wi-Fi to remote First Nations communities in the Northern Territory. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and provide essential connectivity.

ACCAN CEO Carol Bennett emphasised the importance of connectivity, stating, “Reliable and affordable connectivity isn’t a luxury, it’s an essential service, and when you live in remote parts of Australia, that access is even more critical.”

This funding comes in response to alarming reports from Wadeye, a Northern Territory community, which experienced nine weeks of rolling Telstra outages. These outages left residents without the ability to make calls or access the internet, highlighting the urgent need for reliable connectivity.

Connectivity for Safety and Services

The investment is designed to ensure that remote communities can access essential services such as education and healthcare. It will also provide a vital connection to emergency services, acting as a backup when other communication channels fail.

Minister for Communications Anika Wells, along with Minister for Indigenous Australians Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, the Northern Territory Minister for Corporate and Digital Development Joshua Burgoyne MLA, and Member for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour MP, jointly announced this crucial initiative.

Implementation of the Wi-Fi infrastructure is scheduled to commence later this year, offering remote communities a more reliable way to connect with the outside world. By the end of the year, many communities are expected to experience improved communication capabilities.

Connectivity is not merely a convenience. It is a critical public safety issue, especially in areas where communities have been forced to use signal fires due to long waits for pay phone repairs. This investment by the government aims to prevent such scenarios from recurring.

According to ACCAN, this initiative can drastically reduce the reliance on outdated communication methods. Bennett added, “In the wake of deeply concerning reports, this investment is much-needed and very timely.”

ACCAN, Australia’s peak communication consumer organisation, supports this government action. The organisation is funded by the Commonwealth of Australia, ensuring that consumer interests in telecommunications are represented.

The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) has long advocated for improved services in remote communities. With this new funding, ACCAN hopes to see significant improvements in connectivity for First Nations communities, allowing them better access to essential services and improving their quality of life.
