Recommendations from the Economic Inclusion Committee

Cassandra Goldie, CEO of the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), will address media representatives in Perth about the latest findings from the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee. Her address is scheduled for 10:30 am on 24th April at 24 University Avenue, Churchlands. ACOSS has been a leading advocate for social welfare reforms, focusing on economic inclusion and poverty reduction.

The Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee released its report on April 24, 2026, with a primary recommendation to raise the rate of JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, and related payments, including the Remote Area Allowance. This recommendation is aimed at enhancing economic inclusion for vulnerable populations in the upcoming budget, which is expected to be announced in May 2026.

Highlighting these recommendations, Goldie will emphasise their significance in tackling economic inequalities. She stated, “The current payment rates are insufficient for many Australians to live with dignity.” Media access is available through Charlie Moore at 0452 606 171.

Details of the Proposed Payment Increases

The Committee’s report suggests that financial support needs to increase to ensure all Australians can actively participate in society. The report predicts that raising payment rates could lift over 200,000 individuals out of poverty, providing them with better opportunities to engage in the economy. This measure is seen as crucial for addressing ongoing social disparities.

Tasked with providing unbiased advice, the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee focuses on enhancing economic participation and reducing inequality. This report is expected to significantly influence the government’s budget planning, particularly as Australia faces increasing economic challenges.

A comprehensive discussion of the recommendations and their potential impact on the forthcoming budget will occur during the press conference. Stakeholders and media representatives are encouraged to attend for more detailed insights, as the recommendations could lead to significant policy changes.

According to the report, increasing payment rates could potentially lift thousands out of poverty, providing them with better opportunities to engage in the economy. Previous studies have shown that higher benefit rates can lead to improved health outcomes and educational opportunities for recipients, thereby contributing to long-term economic growth.

The Committee’s report also highlights the need for targeted support in remote areas, where the cost of living is significantly higher and access to services is limited. Addressing these regional disparities is essential for ensuring equal opportunities for all Australians.
