Swalm Family Supports Theatre Restoration

A $150,000 grant from the Swalm Family Mālama Keiki Initiative has been awarded to the Hawaii Theatre Centre to aid in recovery efforts following significant storm damage, the theatre announced on April 23, 2026.

This financial boost will assist the historic venue in Honolulu, Hawaii, with necessary repairs and help cover rising insurance costs. Established in 1922, the theatre has faced challenges due to increasing annual insurance premiums and storm-related damages.

“This generous contribution comes at a vital time, ensuring that we can continue to share the magic of live theatre with Honolulu,” expressed Gregory Dunn, president and CEO of the Hawaii Theatre Center.

Importance of Children’s Programs

Over 10,000 children benefit annually from the Hawaii Theatre’s programs, including summer theatre camps and music festivals. Rising insurance costs forced several programmes to be curtailed, underscoring the grant’s importance in sustaining these initiatives.

Nicole Swalm emphasised, “The Hawaii Theatre’s children’s programming is vital to passing our culture along to future generations and inspiring lifelong passion for performing arts.”

Funding from the Swalm family will enable repairs to the theatre’s marquee, digital sign, and roof. The Hawaii Theatre Centre aims to raise an additional $300,000 over the next 90 days to cover full repair and insurance expenses.

Opening its doors in 1922, the Hawaii Theatre has been a cultural hub for more than a century. It hosts a variety of performances including music concerts, comedy and magic shows, and drama performances. Preserving the theatre’s historical significance is crucial to the community.

Generosity from the Swalm family is intended to inspire further community support. The Hawaii Theatre Centre hopes to raise a total of $450,000 to address the full scope of repairs and insurance costs.

Donations can be made through various methods, including digital currency, stocks, donor-advised funds, and credit cards. Contributions are encouraged directly through the Hawaii Theatre Center’s website.

For over 100 years, longer than Hawaii has been a state, the Hawaii Theatre has been a gathering place for audiences. It offers not only performances but also a shared experience reflecting the culture and spirit of the community.

Melbourne’s biggest moments, straight to you.
