AI Data Access Challenges Hinder Enterprises: Cloudera Report

Survey Highlights AI Readiness Illusion

Cloudera released a report on April 14, 2026, revealing significant challenges in data access for nearly 80% of enterprises. These challenges hinder the full potential of AI integration within organisations. The survey, involving almost 1,300 global IT leaders, highlights a paradox. Despite 96% of organisations integrating AI into core business processes, many still struggle with the necessary data foundations for success.

Sergio Gago, Chief Technology Officer at Cloudera, remarked, “Enterprises aren’t struggling to adopt AI, they’re struggling to operationalize it beyond experiments. AI is only as effective as the data that fuels it.”

Key Barriers to AI Success

The report identifies data quality, cost overruns, and poor integration into existing workflows as major obstacles. Seventy-three per cent of respondents indicated that infrastructure constraints have hindered operational initiatives. Despite 84% expressing confidence in data accuracy, persistent silos and inconsistent data quality remain. Only 18% of respondents have fully governed data, highlighting a gap between confidence and reality.

Industries show varying levels of data readiness. In telecommunications, 54% of respondents claim full data visibility. However, only 30% in financial services and 31% in the public sector report the same level of visibility. The survey further reveals that nearly 85% of organisations claim a clear data strategy, yet access remains limited across different environments. This limitation creates an ‘AI readiness illusion’ where perceived readiness does not match actual capability.

Performance constraints have affected nearly three-quarters of organisations, reflecting the difficulties faced in scaling AI across fragmented environments. As AI shifts from experimentation to execution, comprehensive data access and governance will be critical. According to the report, as enterprises aim to transition AI from experimental to operational phases, data readiness will become crucial. Organisations need to fully access and govern their data to unlock AI’s full potential and achieve measurable business outcomes.

The report emphasises the importance of addressing these challenges to unlock AI’s full potential. It shows that while many organisations express confidence in their data strategies, the reality often falls short due to unresolved issues like data silos and inconsistent quality. Cloudera’s findings indicate that overcoming these barriers is essential for realizing the benefits of AI at scale.
