Poll Shows Strong Support for Renewable Focus
Australians are urging the upcoming federal budget to focus on electrification of homes and transport, emphasizing renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels, according to a new poll released on 5th May 2026.
Conducted by YouGov for the Climate Council and the Sunrise Project, the poll surveyed 1,501 Australians. It revealed that 65 per cent of respondents seek government support to purchase electric vehicles, and 79 per cent want assistance in making their homes more energy-efficient.
Because of rising fuel costs, 60 per cent of Australians are driving less, increasing the demand for clean energy solutions. 75 per cent of those surveyed favour incentives for household battery adoption.
Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie stated, "Australians are resilient and are doing what they can, but as people struggle with huge petrol price rises they want the government to back them in to electrify their homes and transport."
Renewable Energy Investment
The poll shows that 62 per cent of Australians want the government to invest in renewable energy sources over coal and gas. This aligns with efforts to secure the nation's energy future and reduce reliance on foreign oil.
Climate Council Councillor and former BP executive Greg Bourne emphasised Australia's leadership in renewable power, noting that nearly 45 per cent of the country's main grid power already comes from renewables.
"Powering our cars, homes and businesses with more of Australia’s wind and sun is a no-brainer to build energy resilience and cut costs," Bourne stated.
The findings come as Australians increasingly turn to public transport, with 32 per cent reporting more frequent use due to the fuel crisis. The federal budget, expected to be announced soon, presents a crucial opportunity to address public demands for cleaner energy solutions.
In response to the current fuel crisis, an estimated 12.8 million Australians have reduced their fuel use. Almost five million Australians are now more likely to consider purchasing an electric vehicle, highlighting the shift towards sustainable transport.
This budget is seen as a pivotal chance to support Australians in transitioning to cleaner energy solutions. The government is urged to take action to help citizens gain more control over their energy usage and costs.
