Data from MyFitnessPal Reveals Preferences

Bananas have been crowned Australia's most popular fruit according to new data from the nutrition and food tracking app, MyFitnessPal, as reported on 15th April 2026.

The app recorded over 9 million logs for bananas in the past year, making them not only the top fruit but the most logged food item overall. Avocados trailed behind with 6.4 million logs, showcasing a significant preference for bananas among Australians. This data offers valuable insights into the actual eating habits of Australians, showing not just what they claim to eat, but what they actually log in the app.

A survey conducted with over a thousand Australians reinforced these findings. 58% of respondents chose bananas over avocados, which garnered 32% of the votes. Meanwhile, 10% of participants were undecided. The poll highlighted the nation's clear preference for bananas, reinforcing their status as a staple in the Australian diet.

Banana Consumption Trends

The survey also highlighted that bananas are predominantly consumed as snacks. 39% of Australians eat them as an afternoon snack, 35% during the morning, and another 35% incorporate them into breakfast. Usage drops significantly for dessert, with only 9% consuming them for this purpose, and a mere 3% choosing them post-workout.

Michaela Sparrow, a nutritionist and MyFitnessPal ambassador, said, "This World Banana Day, bananas continue to earn their place as a daily staple in Aussie's lives because they're simple, nutritious, and incredibly versatile. Even if you prefer an avocado to a banana, there's no denying that bananas are popular as they fit well into everyday life."

Interestingly, 68% of Australians prefer to peel bananas from the stem, while only 13% start from the bottom. 19% are flexible with their peeling methods. The survey revealed that 83% enjoy bananas fresh, with smoothies and cereals being less common alternatives.

Following the survey, bananas remain the most sought-after fruit, with a clear preference for slightly yellow ones, favored by 58% of Australians over fully yellow bananas. These insights indicate a strong cultural tradition surrounding banana consumption, emphasizing their role in daily snacking routines.

According to Michaela, "Bananas showing up as the most logged food tells us people aren't just eating them occasionally, they're a consistent part of people's routines. Theyre typically portable, affordable, and naturally packed with fibre and essential nutrients that support sustained energy."

She added, "Being the most popular fruit in MyFitnessPal's expansive food database, it's also of little surprise were seeing bananas dominate across all times of the day, especially for morning and afternoon snack times. Those moments are when people need a convenient energy boost, and bananas deliver with natural carbohydrates that help keep blood sugar levels steady, making them a smart alternative to highly processed snack options."
