Key Development for Hobart's Urban Future

Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) has welcomed the release of the Macquarie Point Site Master Plan, which aims to transform a 10-hectare area in central Hobart into a vibrant mixed-use precinct. This development is set to include a multipurpose stadium, housing, and commercial spaces, crucial for boosting employment, economic activity, and infrastructure in Tasmania.

Importance of Long-Term Planning

Michael Kilgariff, CCAA Chief Executive Officer, commented, “The Master Plan represents a coordinated vision for one of Hobart’s most significant redevelopment opportunities.” He highlighted the project’s importance in supporting the local economy and infrastructure. CCAA emphasises that long-term planning is essential to ensure a reliable supply of construction materials, especially considering global supply chain uncertainties. This planning is vital to keep infrastructure projects on track.

The necessity of cement, concrete, and aggregates for the construction efforts outlined in the Master Plan was stressed by Mr. Kilgariff. He advocated for a comprehensive Heavy Construction Materials Plan to bolster Tasmania’s infrastructure needs. This plan is essential for sustaining the growing pipeline of infrastructure, housing, and energy projects in the region.

A recent study by Mineral Resources Tasmania confirmed that the supplies of suitable concrete sand in Southeast Tasmania are effectively exhausted. This depletion increases reliance on materials from other regions, affecting costs and supply chains. CCAA continues to advocate for a coordinated government approach to address these challenges and ensure the success of projects like Macquarie Point.

CCAA is committed to working with the Tasmanian Government and industry stakeholders to implement the Macquarie Point project successfully. The organisation stresses the need for improved approval processes and the protection of access to key quarry resources, crucial for maintaining a sustainable supply of construction materials in Tasmania.

By supporting the Macquarie Point Site Master Plan, CCAA believes it will drive significant urban development and infrastructure improvements in Hobart, enhancing the region’s long-term economic resilience. The project is deemed critical for supporting Tasmanian jobs, economic activity, and infrastructure development.
