Edmonton Hosts Global AI Leaders at Upper Bound
Upper Bound, the premier AI conference organized by the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), officially opened in Edmonton. This year, the event has attracted 11,000 attendees from 22 countries, marking a 53% increase from last year. This surge highlights Canada’s growing influence in the global AI sector.
The event showcases a high-level convergence of international AI researchers, business leaders, and policymakers. Sold-out passes and an expanded programme have reinforced Amii’s vital role in advancing AI research and its practical applications.
Cam Linke, CEO of Amii, expressed their pride in building a premier platform. He said, “Upper Bound has grown in tandem with the unprecedented acceleration of AI. We are immensely proud to have built a premier platform where a unique cross-section of attendees can connect.”
Diverse Participation and Highlights
The 2026 conference features insights from prominent figures such as Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence & Digital Innovation, and industry leaders from Google, Meta, and Sony AI. It also serves as a training hub for Canadian AI initiatives, like the AI Workforce Readiness initiative, funded by Google.org.
Eleanor Olszeweski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience, is among the government leaders attending. On-stage presentations by representatives from Anthropic, Electronic Arts, and Mozilla provide diverse perspectives on AI innovations.
The event’s focus includes themes such as AI for Health and Generative AI for Business Productivity. Nate Glubish, Alberta’s Minister of Technology and Innovation, emphasised the importance of these discussions for the province’s technological advancement.
Running from May 19th to May 22nd, Upper Bound offers a comprehensive schedule. Attendees can also access early registration for the 2027 event on the official website. This conference continues to establish Edmonton as a central hub for AI innovation and collaboration.
A key highlight of Upper Bound 2026 is the AI Pathways initiative, a $10.4 million investment by the Government of Canada. This programme empowers 6,000 energy workers with tailored AI training for the low-carbon economy. the AI Workforce Readiness initiative, supported by Google.org with a $5 million investment, provides 125,000 post-secondary students across 57 institutions with AI skills.
The Honourable Myles McDougall, Minister of Advanced Education, is also attending, indicating strong support from the Government of Alberta. This year, the conference’s K-9 school takeovers engage younger students in AI, fostering early interest in technology.
