CASA Emphasises Safety for Finke Desert Race Pilots

Increased Airspace Activity Expected

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Finke Desert Race, drawing thousands of spectators and participants to the remote outback of the Northern Territory. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is reminding pilots and drone operators about crucial safety regulations for this major event.
With attendees travelling by light plane or helicopter, the airspace around Alice Springs airport and nearby aerodromes will see heightened activity. As a result, CASA is emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety protocols.
Pilots must comply with specific separation requirements over the start and finish lines, and along the racetrack. Fixed-wing aircraft need to maintain a minimum distance of 600 metres from the event, while helicopters must stay at least 300 metres away unless they have obtained prior approval from CASA.
Classified as a public gathering, the Finke Desert Race requires increased separation requirements. Pilots must remain above 1,000 feet above ground level (AGL) over the racetrack area to ensure safety.

Drone Restrictions in Place

The event has been declared a no-drone zone. This measure prevents potential accidents involving aircraft and injuries to spectators and participants. Drones are strictly prohibited from flying over the Finke Desert Race area under any circumstances. Only commercial drone pilots who meet operational requirements and hold the appropriate CASA approvals are allowed to operate drones at the event. Non-compliant operations may lead to penalties.
On Prologue Day, 6th June, CASA will host an information stall at the start/finish line. Aviation experts will be available to provide guidance on airport safety and the rules for flying drones.
CASA is committed to ensuring safe skies and offers a range of resources for pilots on their website. This includes guidance on flying in controlled and non-controlled airspace, along with information for drone operators on the Know Your Drone site.
The Finke Desert Race committee is dedicated to maintaining a safe environment for all attendees. They work closely with CASA to enforce regulations and provide visible signage with safety information around Alice Springs airport and other relevant areas.
