Lean AI Engineer Optimises Global Logistics
On 3rd June 2026, C.H. Robinson introduced the world’s first AI technology specifically designed to operate and enhance global supply chains continuously. This innovative solution, named the Lean AI Engineer, is now accessible to customers of the company’s 4PL Managed Solutions.
Collaborating with the Lean AI Planner, the Lean AI Engineer forms a unified system that improves supply chain operations in real time. It rapidly assesses supply chains within 25 to 30 minutes, proposing improvements before any performance issues emerge.
“The breakthrough here is that it’s one closed-loop AI system,” said Jordan Kass, President of Managed Solutions. “It will run continuously, improve the operation it’s running and heal itself when something breaks — without an alert or a human noticing a problem first.”
Technology Assesses and Improves Operations
The AI technology autonomously handles 92% of 4PL shipments globally across trucking, ocean, air, and rail. It manages the process from order creation through tendering, routing, delivery, exceptions, and carrier payment.
C.H. Robinson’s extensive network provides the data necessary for the AI to deliver tailored recommendations for optimisation. The system’s success heavily relies on comprehensive data access, supported by a dedicated team of 450 software engineers and data scientists.
This proprietary AI context layer was developed by capturing institutional knowledge from workflows and sea freight experts. Arun Rajan, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, stated, “Supply chains do not generally suffer from a lack of information. They suffer from the gap between knowing and doing.”
The Lean AI Engineer bridges this gap by executing recommendations autonomously, enhancing efficiency. In the upcoming weeks, it will expand to serve more customers, assessing additional factors like carrier performance and recommending corrective actions proactively.
