Government and MP Support Inquest and Inquiry
The coronial inquest into the death of 10-year-old Bridgette ‘Biddy’ Porter will start on 16th June 2026 at the Coroners Court of New South Wales in Lidcombe. NSW State Coroner Magistrate O’Sullivan will conduct the inquest from 16th to 18th June, operating daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm.
On behalf of Biddy’s parents, Advocacy Australia requested this inquest, with support from Independent MP Philip Donato. Part of the Justice for Biddy campaign, the inquest seeks to uncover the circumstances of Biddy’s death and prevent similar tragedies.
Clare Collins, Chair of Advocacy Australia, shared the hope for closure. “It is hoped that through the coronial inquest Biddy’s loved ones will learn what led to Biddy’s horrific killing,” she stated.
Parliamentary Inquiry Announced
As a result of the Justice for Biddy campaign, the NSW government announced a Parliamentary Inquiry on 9th June 2026 into the forensic division of the NSW Mental Health Review Tribunal (MHRT). This inquiry will assess recent legal changes and the MHRT’s practices concerning treatment, victim support, and community safety.
Submissions for the inquiry close on 6th July 2026. The NSW Legislative Assembly Committee on Law and Safety will conduct this inquiry, focusing on systemic issues rather than individual cases.
Biddy Porter, cherished for her kindness and creativity, aspired to be a journalist with a passion for writing and music. Her parents, Rebekah Keukenmeester and Dominic Porter, lead the Justice for Biddy campaign to ensure her voice is heard.
The Parliamentary Inquiry will also examine the implementation of 2018 review recommendations, addressing potential system gaps. This initiative aims to strengthen the legal framework governing forensic patients in New South Wales.
Advocacy Australia, providing pro-bono services, is dedicated to defending the rights of serious crime victims and their families. The charity hopes that the outcomes of both the inquest and the parliamentary inquiry will lead to meaningful systemic changes.
