Charitable Contributions Exceed $100 Million
New South Wales' Return and Earn scheme has reached a significant milestone, with 16 billion containers returned since the programme's inception in December 2017. This achievement has generated $1.6 billion in refunds for recyclers.
In addition to the financial returns for individuals, the scheme has raised over $100 million for charities and community groups across the state. Donations and hosting fees have supported various causes, including medical research, animal welfare, and support for disadvantaged children.
Danielle Smalley, CEO of scheme coordinator Exchange for Change, commented on the community's involvement, stating, "The NSW community has embraced the ability to donate containers to campaigns that are important to them through Return and Earn."
Community Impact and Partnerships
The scheme's impact is evident in its partnerships with major donation partners. Over the past year, $210,000 was raised for the Children’s Medical Research Institute through the Jeans for Genes appeal. Meanwhile, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT received $175,000 to support individuals with blindness and low vision.
James Dorney, CEO of network operator TOMRA Cleanaway, noted, "This 16 billion container milestone means $1.6 billion in container refunds has been returned to the community since Return and Earn began."
Currently, The Smith Family, a children's education charity, is a statewide donation partner. The charity aims to raise $200,000, with just 30 donated containers funding one book for a disadvantaged student.
With over 600 charities and community groups listed on the Return and Earn app, including the Port Stephens Koala Hospital, the programme helps fund essential equipment for various causes. Supporters have donated more than 230,000 containers to the hospital, raising over $23,000.
The scheme has delivered substantial environmental benefits, reducing litter and landfill. Animal welfare, assistance for farmers, and marine conservation are some of the causes benefiting from the fundraising since December 2017.
Return and Earn is a government initiative in partnership with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority, Exchange for Change, and TOMRA Cleanaway. For more information, visit the official Return and Earn website.
