Urgent Need for Enhanced Protocols and Training

On April 27, 2026, the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) highlighted the need for urgent measures to protect children at risk of anaphylaxis in schools. This announcement took place at the Spanish Congress of Deputies, with support from the Spanish Association of People with Food and Latex Allergies (AEPNAA), the Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC), and the Spanish Society of Pediatric Clinical Immunology, Allergology and Asthma (SEICAP). These organisations presented a joint manifesto advocating for improved school safety protocols, mandatory staff training, and guaranteed access to life-saving adrenaline auto-injectors.

Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapid allergic reaction that can become life-threatening within minutes. The manifesto emphasises immediate and clear responses in school environments to address this risk. EAACI President María José Torres stated, “For many children, anaphylaxis is not a hypothetical risk; it is part of daily life,” pointing out the need for reliable safety measures.

Addressing Gaps in Safety Measures

Practical actions proposed by the manifesto include establishing a common protocol for schools, mandatory training for staff, ensuring adrenaline auto-injectors are accessible, and creating individualized care plans. Stronger coordination between health and education systems is also called for to effectively safeguard children.

According to María José Torres, “Children should not be safer in one school than another. We need clear protocols, trained staff, and immediate access to emergency treatment before time is lost.” The event underscored the unacceptable uneven protection levels across schools.

The event brought together various stakeholders such as patient organisations, scientific societies, healthcare professionals, and families. These groups face daily uncertainty about their children’s safety in schools. EAACI stresses the importance of shifting focus to implementing these safety measures, ensuring that children at risk are protected in practice.

By supporting this initiative, EAACI reaffirms its commitment to advancing evidence-based measures that improve patient safety and protect children and families. The priority now is implementation, making sure that guidelines are followed and executed in schools to provide a safe environment for all children.

EAACI, the leading professional organisation in Europe for allergy and clinical immunology, continues to work towards enhancing patient safety through collaboration with clinicians, researchers, and allied health professionals.
