Encouraging Healthy Habits and Safety

National Walk Safely to School Day will take place across Australia on Friday, 22nd May 2026, inviting primary school children to embrace healthier lifestyles. This event, now in its 27th year, is organized by the Pedestrian Council of Australia.

The initiative aims to highlight the benefits of walking or using active travel modes to school. It focuses on improving health, safety, transport efficiency, and environmental conditions. Harold Scruby, CEO of the Pedestrian Council, emphasised the long-term benefits of walking. He stated, “Walking every day builds confidence, improves concentration and establishes healthy habits for life while making our roads safer and our air cleaner for everyone.”

Impact on Children and Communities

Research indicates that children who are physically active before school are more focused and perform better academically. A study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2017-18 found that 1 in 4 Australian children are affected by obesity. Walking to school can help combat this issue. The initiative also seeks to reduce traffic congestion and encourages the use of public transport.

Schools are encouraged to host a Healthy Breakfast on the day, with opportunities to win one of 28 $250 food vouchers provided by Woolworths. This supports community involvement and raises awareness about childhood obesity. Mr. Scruby added, “Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Walking is the simplest way to achieve this – before school, during the day and afterwards.”

The event calls on parents and carers to actively participate by walking with their children, particularly for those under 10, who should always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road. This not only ensures safety but also promotes family bonding.

Broader Benefits

National Walk Safely to School Day promotes reduced car dependency, which leads to cleaner air and less congestion around schools. It encourages public and active transport usage. The initiative also aims to establish lifelong healthy habits, making children more independent and confident. Schools and P&Cs are encouraged to participate actively and share their stories to inspire others.

Various resources and materials are available on the Walk Safely to School Day website to assist schools and parents in planning and promoting the event. The Pedestrian Council of Australia stresses the importance of community efforts in making the day successful, ensuring children can enjoy a healthier and safer future.
