Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Bioplastics

On April 9, 2026, Ecopha Biotech Pty Ltd announced a groundbreaking partnership between Australia and India to commercialise its proprietary ecopha.bio technology. The initiative focuses on leveraging Australian technology innovation alongside India’s robust production and feedstock capacity. This collaboration aims to build a Pongamia-based bioeconomy platform to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and marine-biodegradable PHA bioplastics.

Dr. Wilson Ling, CEO and Co-founder of Ecopha Biotech, stated, “By uniting Australian innovation with Indian scale, we are creating a sovereign, scalable solution to the twin challenges of climate change and plastic pollution.” The project reflects Ecopha’s transition from advanced research and development to international commercialisation.

Central to the strategy is a dual-output model that transforms Pongamia oil, a non-food and low-carbon feedstock, into both SAF and bioplastics. The integrated system is engineered to meet high market demands for sustainable energy and environmentally friendly materials.

A single facility is projected to process up to 1 million tonnes of Pongamia oil annually. This capability translates into the production of 700,000 tonnes of SAF and 200,000 tonnes of PHA bioplastics, generating a projected annual revenue of AUD 3.2 billion.

Cross-Border Production Model

The strategy capitalises on Australia’s role as a technology and innovation hub and India’s potential as a large-scale production and feedstock center. Ecopha’s cross-border model aims to establish a vertically integrated platform encompassing feedstock, technology, and manufacturing.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to address two pressing global issues: the decarbonisation of aviation and the reduction of plastic pollution. Ecopha’s platform not only promises environmental benefits but also significant economic returns.

The collaboration is designed to facilitate global deployment, showcasing how sustainability can align with high-margin profitability. Dr. Ling highlighted that the dual-output model demonstrates that ecological responsibility and economic growth can coexist effectively.

Melbourne, Australia, served as the launch site for this ambitious project. The announcement underscores Ecopha’s commitment to pioneering solutions that cater to both industry needs and environmental stewardship on a global scale.

This partnership signifies a transformative shift in how renewable resources can be harnessed to meet the growing demand for sustainable products, ushering in a new era in bioeconomy.

Melbourne’s biggest moments, straight to you.
