Tesla Model Y Tops Sales Charts
In May 2026, electric vehicles made up 29.6% of new car sales in Australia, marking a significant milestone in the automotive market. This surge was driven by a combination of lower running costs, more vehicle choices, and supportive government policies like the Electric Car Discount (ECD). The Federal Government’s commitment to these policies has created favourable conditions for this growth.
BEV sales alone accounted for one in every five new vehicle sales, showing a year-on-year doubling in sales figures.
The Tesla Model Y became Australia’s best-selling car for May, with sales reaching 5,605 units. This marks the first time an electric vehicle has topped the national sales charts. Tesla recorded total vehicle sales of 6,433 in May 2026, setting a new record for the company. Meanwhile, BYD retained second place behind only Toyota in monthly brand vehicle figures, with 8,211 sales.
According to Julie Delvecchio, CEO of the Electric Vehicle Council, “May 2026 represents a breakthrough moment for electric vehicles in Australia. Almost 30% of all new vehicles sold were electric, and an EV became the nation’s best-selling vehicle for the first time.” She also emphasised that electric vehicles allow families to avoid the volatility of petrol prices while saving around $3,000 a year in fuel and maintenance costs.
On average, 687 battery electric vehicles were sold per day in May, which is equivalent to about 29 sold every hour or roughly one sold every 2 minutes. This reflects Australians’ growing preference for vehicles that are cost-effective and efficient.
Delvecchio stressed the importance of an accelerated national EV infrastructure plan to meet the growing demand for charging facilities. The Federal Government’s decision to extend the Electric Car Discount sends a clear signal that Australia is committed to making cleaner, more affordable transport a reality for households. “When petrol prices surged, Australians didn’t just feel the pain at the bowser. They had an alternative. And they took it – in record numbers,” Delvecchio stated.
As the transition to electric vehicles accelerates, the Electric Vehicle Council highlights the need for continued support in policies and infrastructure to sustain this momentum. Electric vehicles are not just a trend but a transformative shift in how Australians approach personal transport.
