<h2>ENGIE Accused of Ignoring Vulnerable Customers</h2>

MELBOURNE — The Essential Services Commission has initiated legal proceedings against energy retailer ENGIE in the Supreme Court of Victoria. The action concerns alleged failures in providing adequate customer support, marking the third enforcement action against ENGIE in 18 months.

According to the commission, ENGIE allegedly breached Victorian energy laws between January and November 2024. The allegations include neglecting customers in financial distress and failing to implement necessary protections for those affected by family violence.

The commission has identified several vulnerable customers affected by these alleged failures, including pensioners and a family violence victim-survivor. <a href=”https://melbourne-insider.au/tag/gerard-brody/” title=”Gerard Brody” rel=”noopener”>Gerard Brody</a>, Chairperson of the commission, stated, “This is the third enforcement action the commission has taken against ENGIE in the past 18 months.”

Background of Previous Incidents

The commission’s actions follow previous penalties imposed on ENGIE, including fines amounting to $1.7 million and $1.2 million in 2024 and 2025, respectively. These penalties were related to performance reporting and family violence failures. The ongoing investigation by the commission aims to ensure that consumers experiencing vulnerability receive fair access to essential services.

In recent years, the energy sector in Victoria has seen increased scrutiny from regulatory bodies, with <a href=”https://melbourne-insider.au/tag/customer-support/” title=”customer support” rel=”noopener”>customer support</a> and compliance being at the forefront of regulatory agendas. ENGIE’s case highlights the importance of adhering to legal standards to protect vulnerable communities. The commission’s <a href=”https://melbourne-insider.au/tag/legal-proceedings/” title=”legal proceedings” rel=”noopener”>legal proceedings</a> aim to establish accountability and ensure that energy retailers comply with their obligations under the law.
