Concerns Over Candidate's Conduct
Family First announced a major decision about their preferences for the upcoming Farrer by-election. They will not recommend their number two preference for One Nation because of serious concerns about One Nation’s candidate, David Farley.
National Director Lyle Shelton explained the decision. Recent revelations about Mr Farley’s social media activity, where he shared sexually suggestive content involving young women, raised questions about his judgment and respect for women.
“Family First will not be preferencing One Nation in Farrer because we believe in respecting women and girls. We reject the sex industry’s online platforms designed to deceive young women into thinking posting pornographic images of themselves is ‘empowering’,” Mr Shelton said.
This decision is based on more than social media activity. Comments previously attributed to Mr Farley about former prime minister Julia Gillard were offensive and demeaning. Mr Shelton believes these comments indicate a deeper problem.
Community Values at Stake
Concerns about Mr Farley’s conduct also clash with the values of the local community. In 2024, Albury residents strongly opposed a strip club proposal. The council rejected it after significant community backlash, highlighting the electorate’s values.
Family First has chosen Rebecca Scriven, a local mother of four, as their candidate for the by-election. Mr Shelton emphasised that people in Farrer want a family-friendly community that respects women, not one represented by someone promoting content that objectifies them.
The by-election is scheduled for 15 April 2026. Family First is positioning itself as a party that stands for the dignity of women, the protection of children, and the strengthening of families.
Mr Shelton also highlighted a broader pattern within One Nation that cannot be ignored. He pointed out that this is not an isolated issue, mentioning that in Victoria, the party promoted a senior figure who publicly celebrated her past involvement in running a strip club.
Family First offers a clear alternative. “Preferences are not just tactical; they are a statement of values. And our values are clear: we will not support candidates or parties that contribute to the degradation of women,” Mr Shelton stated.
