ANMF Urges Government Action on Cost Pressures

MELBOURNE — The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) has called for urgent financial relief for nurses, midwives, and aged care workers who are struggling with rising living costs, according to a statement released this week. The ANMF highlighted the unique challenges faced by health professionals who cannot work remotely, unlike many other sectors.

According to Annie Butler, ANMF Federal Secretary, frontline healthcare workers are bearing the brunt of increased expenses such as fuel, tolls, and parking, which are compounded by higher mortgages and rents. “The financial burden of simply getting to and from work is becoming untenable,” Butler said.

The ANMF is advocating for parking costs to be made tax-deductible in the upcoming Federal Budget as one measure of support. Butler emphasised that employers could also help by offering flexible working arrangements to reduce the impact of peak-hour travel expenses.

Challenges Faced by Frontline Workers

Unlike other professions, nurses and midwives must provide in-person care around the clock, making work-from-home arrangements impossible. This situation is particularly challenging for those in rural and regional areas who travel long distances. parking costs in metropolitan areas add to the financial strain due to safety concerns and limited public transport options during non-standard hours.

The ANMF, representing over 356,000 members, is pushing for practical solutions to alleviate the financial pressures on its members. The call for relief comes amid ongoing global conflicts that continue to drive up living costs, affecting various sectors in Australia.

In addition to financial relief, there is a push for increased mental health support for healthcare workers. The stress of financial instability, combined with the demands of their profession, has taken a toll on their well-being. Healthcare professionals are urging the government to consider comprehensive support packages that address both economic and mental health challenges, ensuring a sustainable working environment for those who are vital to the healthcare system.
