Community Unites for Cancer Research and Support

The Gisborne Relay for Life event successfully raised over $101,000 for cancer research and support services, with 47 teams walking more than 20,000 kilometres. The event took place on the 22nd and 23rd of April.

This annual gathering drew over 1,500 attendees, who joined forces to fight against cancer. The raised funds will enhance the Cancer Society’s services, aiding patients and their families, and supporting cancer prevention and education programs.

Volunteers from the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) were pivotal in the event by serving a complimentary lunch during the Celebration Lap. This part of the event honors cancer survivors and their supporters. As a result, the event’s costs were kept to a minimum.

Significant Contributions and Achievements

Daryl Gowers, a local participant, completed an impressive 150 laps, demonstrating his dedication to the cause. Campion College led the fundraising efforts by contributing over $5,000.

The event reached 75% of its $135,000 fundraising target. Organizers continue to welcome donations to meet the goal. This effort is part of a global initiative by the RRT, the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. RRT has 16,500 volunteers worldwide who support communities through emergency relief and frontline worker support.

Event Coordinator Shay Podjursky expressed gratitude, stating, “The supply of a generous, nutritious and well-prepared lunch for over 150 people could easily add a large cost to our event. RRT’s donation means we can celebrate those in our community affected by cancer, while directing every fundraised dollar back into our services.”

Paul Simmons, RRT New Zealand’s General Manager, remarked, “Relay for Life brings together the Gisborne community to support those affected by cancer, and RRT is proud to play a part in that. By providing this meal, we help ensure fundraising efforts go directly to the vital services the Cancer Society provides.”

The Relay for Life event exemplifies the power of community spirit in Gisborne, as participants, volunteers, and supporters unite in the fight against cancer. Donations can still be made through the Relay for Life website.

RRT’s involvement in Gisborne’s Relay for Life highlights their ongoing commitment to community welfare, building on their global mission to assist in times of need and support various charitable causes.
