Illegal Detention Sparks Call for Action
On Monday, 4 May 2026, Greenpeace Australia Pacific called on the Australian government to ensure the safe passage of the Gaza flotilla after six Australians were illegally detained by the Israeli military.
These Australians were aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla when the Israeli military intercepted their vessels in international waters. Reports indicate that flotilla members faced mistreatment, with three Australians requiring hospitalization in Crete. The detained individuals have launched a hunger strike to protest the detention of two flotilla leaders still imprisoned in Israel.
Kate Smolski, Programme Director at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, stated: “Greenpeace stands in solidarity with the brave individuals, including six Australians, risking their safety aboard the peaceful flotilla attempting to break Israel’s illegal siege on Gaza.”
Greenpeace’s Call for International Law Adherence
Greenpeace is urging the Australian government to uphold international law and ensure the flotilla’s safe journey. According to Greenpeace, intercepting and illegally detaining Australian citizens in international waters is unacceptable. The organisation emphasises the importance of peaceful protest at sea and safeguarding humanitarian efforts.
Greenpeace’s vessel, the Arctic Sunrise, plays a crucial role by providing logistical and maritime expertise to support the flotilla. This international initiative aims to end the Gaza siege and stand with the Palestinian people. More than 70 vessels from different nations have joined the effort to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Greenpeace has long condemned both the humanitarian and environmental crises caused by Israel’s actions in Gaza. The organisation urges global leaders to intervene and continues to support the flotilla, demanding the release of detained flotilla leaders.
The Australian government faces increasing pressure to act decisively against the detention and mistreatment of its citizens. Meanwhile, three Australians have started a hunger strike, demanding the release of their fellow detained leaders.
Greenpeace, with its rich history of non-violent direct action, stands firm in its mission. The Global Sumud Flotilla marks a significant moment in the ongoing struggle against the blockade, as the international community watches closely. Greenpeace and its allies call for worldwide support to ensure the safety and success of the mission.
