Public Transport and Tax Reforms Proposed
Nepean’s Greens candidate, Dr Sianan Healy, has presented an extensive plan aimed at managing the rising cost of living impacting families on the Southern Mornington Peninsula. Inadequate public transport and escalating expenses are identified as major concerns.
Families in the region face tough decisions, such as whether to fill their cars with fuel, pay power bills, or buy groceries. Dr Healy emphasises that the area’s dependence on cars and long commutes intensifies these difficulties.
Significant upgrades to the Peninsula’s public transport system are being advocated by the Greens. Their proposal includes major investments in clean, safe, and fully accessible buses. Expanding the bus network with improved routes is a priority to help residents travel without relying on cars.
Frequent services throughout the day and evening form part of the plan, transforming public transport into a practical and convenient option for all.
High fuel prices, coupled with inadequate transport options, burden not only households but also local businesses and the tourism sector. Rising fuel costs impact cafes, wineries, and accommodation providers, as visitors might find it too expensive to travel to the Peninsula. Dr Healy points out these challenges.
Years of policies favoring large corporations over households have led to the current cost of living crisis. Dr Healy criticises previous governments for allowing energy companies, large supermarkets, and banks to achieve record profits while families are advised to cope with tough times.
Eliminating fossil fuel donations to political parties is a key initiative if Dr Healy is elected. This measure aims to ensure energy policies are created in the public interest, free from the influence of coal and gas lobbyists.
The Greens propose that billionaires and the ultra-wealthy should pay fair taxes, which would help finance essential services and offer cost-of-living relief to residents.
The plan involves doubling royalties on coal, gas, and oil, and imposing levies on big banks and property developers, ensuring that corporations making billions contribute more to the community.
Cost of living pressures are reshaping life on the Peninsula. Older residents skip meals or medical appointments, while parents juggle multiple jobs to cover rent and bills. Dr Healy addresses these pressing issues.
Dr Healy is committed to advocating for corporate regulations, public transport investment, and affordable housing. She assures continued efforts towards these goals if elected, providing a strong Greens voice in Parliament.
