Leadership and Collaboration at Rural WONCA

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) will reinforce its dedication to rural health with a strong presence at Rural WONCA 2026. This significant event will take place in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, starting on 9 April 2026. The College aims to improve health outcomes for rural communities both in Australia and globally.

Rural WONCA is the World Organisation of Family Doctors’ Working Party on Rural Practice. It is a global network that unites rural family doctors, researchers, and educators. They address unique challenges faced by rural and remote communities, such as access to care, workforce sustainability, and health equity.

Dr. Rod Omond, RACGP Rural Deputy Chair, highlighted the critical role of rural general practice. He stated, “Rural general practice is the backbone of healthcare in many communities, yet it faces some of the most persistent workforce and access challenges.”

The 2026 conference presents a strategically important opportunity for RACGP to showcase leadership in rural health. It will allow them to strengthen international partnerships and build on longstanding relationships within the sector. Senior RACGP representation at the conference will further cement the College’s standing as a key advocate for high-quality, sustainable rural healthcare.

During the conference, RACGP plans to engage with counterparts, including the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Their representatives attended the RACGP’s GP25 conference, which highlighted ongoing collaboration. They will also interact with Rural WONCA leadership, including Associate Professor Bruce Chater, an Australian rural GP and Co-Convenor and Immediate Past Chair of Rural WONCA.

Innovative Support Programs

RACGP will present a session on an innovative professional development programme delivered at GP25. This programme is designed specifically to support rural female general practitioners, focusing on building leadership, advocacy, and mentoring capabilities.

The immersive, face-to-face workshop was created in response to feedback from rural female GPs. They sought nonclinical skills to navigate systemic barriers and sustain long-term rural careers. Participants will experience interactive sessions on effective communication, advocacy strategies, mentoring models, and creative career pathways.

The programme featured a panel of prominent rural female leaders who shared their lived experiences and practical insights. Small group formats encouraged collaboration, networking, and problem solving, allowing participants to develop personalized action plans, increased confidence, and enduring professional connections.

Following the success of the GP25 conference, RACGP looks forward to announcing details of upcoming events in the coming months.

Melbourne’s biggest moments, straight to you.
