Homelessness NSW Backs Inquest Request
Homelessness NSW has supported urgent demands for a coronial inquest into the death of rough sleeper Bikram Lama. The organisation highlights growing concerns over policy failures that may have contributed to his demise.
On October 15, 2023, Homelessness NSW CEO Dom Rowe said, “An inquest is vital to examine the policy failures that led to Mr Lama’s tragic death and to ensure this never happens again.” The organisation emphasises the necessity of a formal examination to address systemic issues contributing to deaths among the homeless population.
The tragic passing of Bikram Lama has prompted widespread calls for accountability and meaningful reform. Homelessness NSW argues that the death of every person experiencing homelessness often results from systematic failures. It advocates for mandatory reporting of homelessness-related deaths to the coroner. This measure aims to better understand the circumstances, locations, and causes of these incidents.
Rowe added, “We strongly support mandating the reporting of homelessness deaths to the coroner to help determine where, when, and how deaths occur.” Following Bikram Lama’s death, the call for an inquest aims to prevent future tragedies and improve the support systems for vulnerable populations.
Although details on the next steps or potential dates for the inquest have not been disclosed, the urgency of the matter is clear. Homelessness NSW expressed sympathy for Mr. Lama’s family and friends, emphasizing that every death in the homeless community is a profound loss. According to Rowe, understanding these deaths’ circumstances is crucial for implementing effective policy changes.
The organisation’s push for change reflects a broader movement to address homelessness as an urgent social issue. Advocates argue that without proper investigation and understanding, many lives remain at risk. Eliot from Homelessness NSW can be contacted at 0423 921 200 for further information.
