Puppies and Trainers Parade in Brisbane

Seeing Eye Dog puppies, along with trainers and volunteers, will walk through Brisbane on April 29th to celebrate International Guide Dog Day. This event honors the life-changing work of guide dogs and the dedication of those involved in their training.

The procession will start at Central Station and make its way through the botanic gardens to The Gardens Club cafe. Here, the public can learn more about Seeing Eye Dogs and explore volunteer opportunities while enjoying the company of the puppies.

Dr. Nicola Cotton, Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs National Manager, said, “It takes around two years of rigorous training and care before a Seeing Eye Dog can become fully qualified. The cost to train and care for just one Seeing Eye Dog is in excess of $50,000.”

Training and Community Impact

Training a Seeing Eye Dog is an expensive and comprehensive process that exceeds $50,000 per dog. This highlights the crucial role community support plays in the program’s success. “The impact that a Seeing Eye Dog has in the life of someone who is blind or has low vision is enormous,” Dr. Cotton explained. These dogs increase mobility and independence.

Over 260 active handlers and Seeing Eye Dogs work across Australia. The programme thrives because of the backing of donors, volunteers, and the wider community. Dr. Cotton remarked, “I’m proud to say that we currently have over 260 active handlers and working Seeing Eye Dogs across Australia.”

The event will run from 10:30 am to 11:30 am at The Gardens Club, located at 75 Gardens Point Road, Brisbane City. Visitors are invited to enjoy coffee, interact with the puppies, and learn more about the services and programmes offered by Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs.

International Guide Dog Day also highlights the ongoing need for community involvement in supporting these essential services. “All are welcome to come along and chat to our team about the programme and the services we can provide,” Dr. Cotton added. Whether interested in services or volunteering, attendees can gain insights while getting a dose of puppy cuddles.

This celebration not only raises awareness about the essential services provided by Seeing Eye Dogs but also offers a chance for the public to engage with the programme and consider volunteering. All community members are welcome to join the festivities and share in the joy that these puppies bring while learning about their journey to becoming fully qualified guides.

Melbourne’s biggest moments, straight to you.
