Rising Popularity of Asian Destinations

Holafly’s Summer Travel Report 2026 reveals that Japan and South Korea are leading a shift in global summer travel trends, with Japan now the second most popular destination after Spain on June 18, 2026.

Spain maintains its top position, but Japan’s popularity has surged, followed by the United States and South Korea. Meanwhile, Thailand has entered the global top 10 for the first time, underscoring Asia’s growing influence on the travel industry.

Japan’s appeal spans across continents, drawing travellers from North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Tokyo emerged as the most-mentioned city among surveyed travellers, showcasing Japan’s unique cultural and technological offerings.

According to Holafly data, 46.4% of respondents plan international trips this year, up from 37.6% last year, with over half visiting multiple destinations per trip. Travellers are increasingly opting for longer, multi-country itineraries.

Cultural Appeal and Increased Access

The rise of South Korea in global travel rankings is driven by the worldwide popularity of Korean culture, entertainment, and cuisine. The country has seen a surge in interest from younger travellers, bolstered by increased accessibility and expanded tourism offerings.

The Japan National Tourism Organisation reports that Japan welcomed a record number of international visitors in 2025. This trend is expected to continue as global events encourage travellers to explore multiple destinations.

Daniela Prado, Brand Director at Holafly, stated, “Japan and South Korea have become truly global destinations,” appealing to travellers seeking rich and diverse experiences.

As travel becomes more ambitious, digital tools are increasingly essential. Travellers rely on technology for navigation, reservations, and communication, making staying online a vital part of the travel experience.

Holafly’s report also shows that 75% of travellers planning to attend the FIFA World Cup intend to visit two or more host cities, turning a single event into a broader travel experience.

Asia’s influence on global tourism is no longer emerging but is now a significant force. Travellers are inspired by the unique experiences and cultural diversity offered by Asian destinations.
