Leadership Changes for Smoke-Free Future

Philip Morris International (PMI) has announced significant changes to its regional leadership team as the company progresses towards a smoke-free future. These changes will take effect from 1st August 2026.

Marco Hannappel has been appointed President of the Europe Region, succeeding Massimo Andolina, who will become the Group Chief Financial Officer. Hannappel joined PMI in 2019 as President and Managing Director Italy. He later served as Area Vice President Southwest Europe, overseeing Italy and Iberia, and most recently as President of the Latin America & Canada Region.

With Hannappel’s transition, Can Kuterdem will take on the role of President for the Latin America & Canada Region. Kuterdem joined PMI in 2020 and previously transformed the Polish market as Managing Director, developing it into a multi-category business. Earlier, he was Vice President Strategy & Programme Delivery, Europe Region, where he shaped regional strategies and led critical business initiatives.

Experienced Leaders at the Helm

The new appointments aim to strengthen the leadership pipeline of Philip Morris International. Both Hannappel and Kuterdem bring extensive experience from their senior roles within PMI and other industries, such as technology and consulting.

Gijs de Best continues as President for the South Asia, Indochina, CIS & Middle East & Africa Region. He assumed this role in January 2026 and brings over 20 years of leadership experience at PMI, having started as a financial analyst in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Vassilis Gkatzelis retains his position managing the East & Southeast Asia, Pacific, and PMI Global Travel Retail Region.

All four regional presidents report directly to Frederic de Wilde, CEO of the International Business Unit of PMI. This unit is crucial as it generates the majority of PMI’s total net revenues.

Philip Morris International is committed to a future that moves beyond traditional cigarette sales, investing significantly in smoke-free products and wellness areas. The evolved organisational model announced in late 2025 supports this strategic direction.
