JCPAA to Hold Hearing on Financial Statements

Inquiry Focuses on Compliance and Technology

On 29th April 2026, the Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit (JCPAA) plans to conduct a public hearing. This session aims to scrutinize the Commonwealth Financial Statements for the fiscal years 2023-24 and 2024-25.

Focusing on themes identified by the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO), this hearing is part of an ongoing inquiry into these financial statements. Entity compliance with legislation, particularly section 83 of the Constitution, IT control environments, and the adoption of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence within the public service are the main areas of interest.

Josh Burns MP, Committee Chair, emphasised the importance of the event, stating, “This hearing provides the Committee an opportunity to examine key themes identified through the Australian National Audit Office’s audit of the Commonwealth Financial Statements.”

Details of the Hearing

Scheduled from 9.30am to 12.30pm AEST, the hearing will take place at location 2R1 and will be accessible online. Officials from diverse agencies, including the ANAO, Australian Centre for Agricultural Research, and various government departments, will be present as witnesses.

Beginning at 9.30am, Session 1 will discuss compliance with legislation. Representatives from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, along with others, will participate until 10.25am. The next session, from 10.30am to 11.20am, will delve into IT control environments, featuring input from the Department of Defence, Department of Finance, and NBN Co Limited.

Running from 11.35am to 12.30pm, Session 3 will focus on the increasing use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. Contributors will include the Australian Public Service Commission, Australian Taxation Office, and Digital Transformation Agency.
