Examining Privacy, Pension, and Defence
The Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit (JCPAA) has initiated three new inquiries focusing on client privacy in the Australian Public Service (APS), the administration of the Age Pension, and Defence procurement of Infantry Fighting Vehicles. These inquiries, announced on 15th April 2026, aim to scrutinize frameworks for managing privacy risks, evaluate the administration efficiency of the Age Pension, and review the procurement processes for Defence’s Infantry Fighting Vehicles. Submissions for these inquiries are invited by Friday, 8th May 2026.
Mr. Josh Burns MP, Chair of the Committee, stated, “These inquiries address important areas identified by the Committee for further examination, including issues raised in recent Australian National Audit Office audits.” The inquiry into the management of client privacy will assess how public sector entities identify and manage privacy risks under the Privacy Act 1988. It will also examine their capability to respond to data breaches and cyber threats.
Focus on Privacy, Administration, and Defence Procurement
Besides privacy, the investigation into the Age Pension will scrutinize the Department of Social Services and Services Australia’s processes for eligibility assessment and applicant engagement. The inquiry will consider the effectiveness of oversight arrangements and how these departments communicate with applicants and recipients. This investigation aims to ensure that the administration of the Age Pension is both effective and transparent.
In addition, the Defence procurement inquiry will evaluate the effectiveness of the tender process and contracting arrangements as outlined in Auditor-General Report No. 26 2025-26. The focus will be on whether Defence conducted an effective tender process and established contracts that support value for money outcomes. The inquiry will also examine the transparency and accountability of the procurement process to ensure that public funds are used efficiently.
These inquiries provide an opportunity for stakeholders to engage with the process and influence the outcomes. Details, including terms of reference, submissions received, and public hearing schedules, are accessible on the JCPAA’s website. The Committee encourages individuals and organisations to participate. By visiting the website, interested parties can make a submission, read other submissions, and get details for upcoming public hearings. Tracking the Committee and receiving email updates is possible by clicking the “Track Committee” button on the page.
JCPAA’s inquiries are crucial as they address significant public sector issues. The management of client privacy, ensuring effective Age Pension administration, and scrutinizing Defence procurement processes are essential for maintaining public trust. The Committee’s work will help identify areas for improvement and ensure that government operations are conducted with integrity and accountability.
